(Prairie Rosinweed). A tall erect plant of the Upland Garden, up to 6 feet high, opposite leaves with very tiny teeth on the edge and no leaf stalk, but leaves do not surround the stem. Upper and lower leaves similar in size. Yellow flower heads from 2 - 3 inches wide, with 16 to 33 rays that are 1/2 to 1" long. The central disk is 1/2 to 1" wide. There are usually a number of branched flower clusters. One of the four Silphiums in the Garden. "Rosinweed" is a common name applied to many Silphiums due to the resin. The genus name, Silphium, is from the Greek referring to resinous juice. The species name, integrifolium, is Latin for "entire-leaved". |

| Notes: This plant was NOT listed on Martha Crone's 1951 inventory of plants in the Garden at that time and was added sometime later. It is reported to be native to parts of Minnesota in certain literature but the Minnesota DNR does not list the plant as native; however, it is native to much of the Central United States. For more detail on this plant and the other Silphiums, see the article "The Four Silphiums". | |||||||||
