Other names and notes
One of the two Bellworts in the Garden (the other is Wild Oats), this plant has larger deep-yellowish, 6 part, drooping flowers, usually more than one per plant. Unlike it's smaller cousin, the leaves not only clasp but are pierced by the stem. Plants range from 8 to 20" high. The crown can send up multiple stems forming a nice clump which is usually not hidden by other plants until after the blooming period of late April - early May. A maturity a 3-lobed seed capsule is formed. The plant prefers a neutral to limy soil and will compete well with trees. Once you identify this plant, it is an easy one to remember.
